As the port authority, MPA strives to promote and ensure environmentally-friendly shipping and port activities in the Port of Singapore, one of the busiest ports in the world.
Singapore’s strong commitment to environmentally-friendly shipping and port activities is underscored by the country being compliant with environment regulations set by national and global bodies, such as being a party to all the Annexes of the International Maritime Organisation’s MARPOL convention, consistent application of environment standards and investment in green initiatives and technology.
Singapore’s efforts were recognised at the 24th Asian Freight and Supply Chain Awards in Jun 2010 when the Port of Singapore bagged the inaugural ‘Best Green Service Provider – Seaport’.
MPA also drives maritime research and development in clean technologies in partnership with tertiary institutions and the industry, supported by MPA’s Maritime Innovation and Technology Fund.
MPA promotes resource conservation and environmental awareness among our employees.
On-going initiatives to raise environmental awareness amongst our employees include disseminating environmental tips through email blasts and placing recycling bins prominently within the office premises. As part of our recycling efforts, MPA donated more than 50 used cartridges and toners to the NUS Club in Jul 2010 in support of the NUS Rag and Flag Day.
Over 60 MPA staff participated in an educational tour of the Pulau Semakau landfill on 25 Jun 2010 where they learnt about the history of the landfill and how non-incinerable refuse from incineration plants are being disposed in Singapore. The tour also enhanced their awareness of the efforts taken to preserve the marine ecosystem.
