World Shipping Council Chief in Singapore to Share Insights on Maritime Security

15 September 2005

Mr Christopher Koch, President and CEO of the World Shipping Council (WSC) is visiting Singapore from 15-16 September 2005 under the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA)'s Distinguished Visitors Programme (DVP).

The WSC is a Washington-based trade association representing liner shipping companies serving America's international trade. Mr Koch is an active participant in the US Government discussions on shipping and cargo issues. He is also Chairman of the Department of Homeland Security's National Maritime Security Advisory Committee.

The WSC and Singapore share a common goal of improving maritime security to safeguard the global trading system, and to do so without impeding the flow of commerce. Mr Koch's trip to Singapore serves as a good opportunity for Singapore and the WSC to gain a deeper mutual understanding, and to explore possibilities of working together on maritime matters. It would also be an opportunity to share insights on important developments in cargo and supply chain security.

During Mr Koch's visit in Singapore, he will meet leaders from both the government and private sectors and discuss issues relating to maritime security. Mr Koch will also give a talk on container security to the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) on 15 September at 3.30pm at the Marina Mandarin Hotel.

Established in 1997, MPA's DVP is a useful platform for the MPA to meet and establish long-term working relationships with key personalities from the international maritime community. The Programme has been an effective channel for exchanging views on global maritime issues and enhancing Singapore's maritime relations with the rest of the world.
