Launch of Maritime Week 2007

MARITIME WEEK RETURNS WITH SOME 4,000 LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL PARTICIPANTS

  • Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew to deliver inaugural Singapore Maritime Lecture
  • 20 international conferences, seminars and social events lined upSingapore's second Maritime Week will be officially launched this evening by Minister of State for Finance and Transport, Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, at the Singapore Shipping Association's annual dinner and dance.

Initiated by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), Maritime Week 2007 takes place between 20 and 28 September, and will feature some 20 international conferences, seminars and social events, that celebrate and showcase the diversity and vibrancy of the Singapore maritime industry.

About 4,000 local and international participants are expected for Maritime Week 2007.

The key highlights of Maritime Week 2007 include:

Inaugural Singapore Maritime Lecture

Singapore Maritime Lecture is a new highlight for Maritime Week. This prestigious lecture series will feature internationally prominent personalities who will bring thought-leadership to strategic issues of concern to the maritime industry.

Singapore's Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew will be delivering the inaugural lecture, which will be held at the Fullerton Hotel. About 300 maritime luminaries are expected to attend this event.

Singapore International Maritime Awards Gala Dinner 2007

Into its 4th year, the Singapore International Maritime Awards Gala Dinner will play host to some 700 industry luminaries from the international maritime community.

The Guest of Honour for the event, which will be held at the Shangri-la Hotel, will be the Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Raymond Lim.

The event seeks to recognise the contributions of industry players towards the growth of Singapore as a global hub port and international maritime centre.

Two new prestigious awards, the Maritime Service Provider Award and the Offshore and Marine Engineering Award, have been added this year to the existing stable of 5 special awards.

International Maritime - Port Technology and Development Conference (MTEC) 2007

Jointly organised by the MPA and the National University of Singapore, with the Nanyang Technological University, the Port of Rotterdam and Delft University of Technology as co-organisers, the conference will be opened by Guest of Honour, Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Raymond Lim, at the Suntec Convention City Centre.

MTEC 2007 is the second in the conference series which alternates between Rotterdam and Singapore. The first event was held in Rotterdam in 2005.

This conference aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from the maritime and port industry, research and academic institutes and authorities to exchange views on new developments and practices in maritime and port technologies.

International Chemical and Oil Pollution Conference (ICOPCE) and Chemical Spill Exercise 2007

Themed "Prevention & Preparedness: The Key to Safe Shipping & Clean Seas," ICOPCE 2007 will feature a host of topics covering the latest in safe shipping and issues concerning prevention, preparedness and response to the threat of oil and chemical spills.

This biennial event will be opened by Minister of State for Finance and Transport, Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, at the Shangri-la Hotel.

The conference will end on an exciting note with a chemical spill exercise, codenamed ChemSpill. Taking place at a seaward location off Cyrene Beacon, the exercise will showcase Singapore's capabilities and close co-ordination in the event of a chemical spill.

MPA's main organising partner for this year's exercise is Oiltanking Singapore Ltd. Key participants include the Singapore Police Force, Police Coast Guard, Singapore Civil Defence Force, National Environment Agency, Ministry of Health, Singapore Armed Forces, Republic of Singapore Navy and the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore.

Maritime Week was initiated in 2006 and seeks to be firmly established, in time to come, as an annual major event on the international maritime calendar.

The week of events brings together key personalities from the global maritime community to meet, exchange ideas and network, generating greater buzz for the maritime industry and adding further value for maritime companies to be in Singapore.

The main objectives of Maritime Week are:

1. To showcase Singapore as a choice regional and international venue for maritime events;

2.1To highlight Singapore's attraction as an international maritime centre beyond a hub port; and
