Strategic centre for maritime business

Developing Singapore into a strategic centre for maritime business where commerce, shipping, maritime ancillary services and logistics expand and flourish.

Capitalising on its strategic location, sophisticated port facilities and shipyards, Singapore’s maritime industry is energetic and exciting. Home to over 5,000 shipping companies and maritime ancillary service providers and combined with other strengths as an international business and financial hub, Singapore is a strategic centre for maritime business.

Shipping is an international and capital intensive business. Recognising this, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has in place a number of attractive support programmes for maritime businesses. We offer help in setting up a maritime business as well as in expanding existing operations.

For businesses in need of a highly skilled and specialised workforce, Singapore is home to many maritime professional services such as shipbroking, shipping finance and maritime law. Leveraging on a well-regarded education system and existing intellectual expertise, the MPA has introduced a range of maritime degree/diploma programmes and specialised staff training courses. Working in partnership with local and international education institutions, MPA offers subsidies and scholarships aimed at promoting manpower development in the maritime industry.

Technology companies and start-ups engaged in innovative maritime research and development (R&D) are available to access funds to help them set up operations in Singapore. MPA will give financial aid during the early stages of product development and testing, and if the trials prove successful, MPA will provide help in bringing the idea or invention to market.

Shipping companies in Singapore and the region have access to a cost-efficient, over-the-counter facility to clear and settle energy and freight derivative trades in SGX AsiaClear.

Maritime community members in Singapore can also take advantage of opportunities for business networking and keep abreast of the latest market trends that impact their business. Sea Asia and the Singapore Maritime Week are just two of many global conferences, seminars, trade shows and exhibitions hosted in Singapore.
