A master is required to issue a Certificate of Discharge and a full account of wages to a seaman upon discharge.

Certificate of Discharge

A master is required to give a Certificate of Discharge to the seamen upon his discharge. The certificate can be:

  • issued in the form of an endorsement in the seaman’s discharge book; or
  • downloaded (Form Marine 82) if the seaman does not have a discharge book.

The dates and places columns of both the engagement and discharge shall be identical to those recorded in the Crew Agreement.An entry shall be made in the “Rating” column of the Official Log Book when a seaman is promoted or demoted during a voyage.

Statement of Account of Wages

The master is required to furnish a seaman with a full and true account of his wages as required by the Merchant Shipping Act before the seaman is discharged. This includes any reductions that may have been made.

The account of wages shall contain the particulars specified in the Third Schedule of the Merchant Shipping (Seamen’s Wages and Accounts) Regulations 1996 .
