12th Singapore Maritime Week Opens

23 April 2017

Mrs Josephine Teo, Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of Transport, Prime Minister's Office and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, officially opened Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2017 today. Themed “Navigating through Challenging Times”, SMW 2017 gathers the international maritime community in Singapore for a week of conferences, dialogues and exhibitions until 28 April 2017.

2        “As the global maritime industry continues to face headwinds, it is critical for us to band together to address challenges. SMW 2017 is a platform where we can discover how to turn these challenges into opportunities. We believe the knowledge exchange, debates, exhibitions and networking opportunities will help the industry navigate through the challenging times and prepare them for the future,” said Mrs Teo.

3        SMW 2017 will also feature public outreach activities aimed at developing a greater appreciation for Singapore’s vibrancy and diversity as a premier global hub port and leading international maritime centre.

4        The inaugural Sea Dreams musical held at VivoCity Rooftop Amphitheatre, will have its second and final run this evening. It tells the story of a young girl’s journey to achieving her maritime aspirations. Developed in collaboration with Global Cultural Alliance, the original production fuses dramatic storytelling, elements of circus arts and the explosive rhythms of the sea.

5        Visitors to the SMW 2017 exhibition will also get to experience and understand the capabilities of Singapore’s port, marine engineering sectors and maritime services via onsite simulators and interactive panels. In addition, the Port Operations Control Centre and Automated Crane Operations Centre will also be “accessible” to members of the public for the first time ever. A 360° virtual reality video will give a tour of these two areas with restricted access.

6        Spearheaded by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), more than 20,000 maritime professionals including high-level delegates from port authorities, industry leaders and maritime experts and 30,000 members of the public are expected to attend the events throughout the week from 22 April to 28 April 2017.
