New Chairman Appointed to the National Maritime Safety at Sea Council to Continue Driving Maritime Safety
30 June 2020
Mr Ishak Ismail, Director of Business Development (Asia) at BAE Systems Hägglunds AB and member of the External Review Panel on SAF (Singapore Armed Forces) Safety, will be appointed as the new Chairman for the National Maritime Safety at Sea Council (NMSSC) on 1 July 2020. He takes over from founding Chairman of the NMSSC, Professor Richard Lim, Chairman of ST Logistics Pte Ltd.
2 The NMSSC, established by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) in 2015, consists of members from the private sector, public sector and associations. It seeks to:
Serve as an advisory body to the MPA Board of Directors on maritime safety
Promote and build a progressive safety at sea culture by addressing both human and non-human elements that contribute to maritime safety
Help raise the level of maritime safety and standards through public awareness campaigns, conferences, workshops and safety studies
Endorse initiatives and projects proposed by MPA-Industry Safety Working Groups and maritime industry for follow-on implementation
Recognise exemplary efforts and promote good practices in the maritime industry
3 Professor Richard Lim, outgoing Chairman of the NMSCC, said, “When we started the NMSSC, our priority was to proactively work with industry players to address issues related to navigational safety and to raise the level of maritime safety, particularly within the waters around Singapore. Over the past five years, I am glad we have made progress in those areas through various initiatives. These include key initiatives such as equipping regional passenger ferries with easier-to-use buckle-type life jackets, as well as organising outreach efforts such as the annual international Safety@Sea Week. The event brings together about 300 local and international participants to collaborate with organisations and countries to promote maritime safety best practices in the region and beyond. I would like to thank all my council members and partners for their unwavering support.”
4 Mr Ishak Ismail said, “Safety is extremely important and needs to be the firm anchor for Maritime Singapore. Together with the council members, I look forward to working closely with our partners to ensure that maritime safety standards remain high in the Port of Singapore. This is so that those who visit, use and work at our ports, can return home safely to their families every day.”
5 Mr Niam Chiang Meng, Chairman of MPA, said, “On behalf of MPA and the maritime industry, I would like to thank Richard for his leadership in stewarding NMSSC. I am confident that Ishak will sustain and strengthen our efforts on maritime safety. This is especially crucial as we make changes to the way we work in the maritime industry moving to the ‘new normal’ post COVID-19.”
6 Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the format of the annual International Safety@Sea Conference, organised by MPA, will be slightly different this year. Several smaller forums will be webcast live on 1 December 2020 for interested parties worldwide to join in1.
MPA will allow onsite participation at the forums should the prevailing guidelines to minimise the risk of community spread of COVID-19 in Singapore allow for it.
