Industry Update
Over the past three years (2022–2024), marine incident data collected from Singapore- registered ships (SRS) revealed that personnel injuries represent the highest category of incidents, surpassing other type of incidents. A comprehensive analysis of these incidents indicated that preventing personnel injuries should be a primary focus for improving safety within maritime operations.

Injury Analysis
Analysis of incident reports over the past three years indicates that personnel injuries are the most frequently occurring incidents in maritime operations. The most affected body parts include:

These statistics point to specific areas of concern, particularly the high rate of hand and finger injuries, which often occur during performing manual tasks. This emphasises the need for better prevention strategies specifically tailored to these areas.
Key Safety Recommendations
To reduce these injury rates, maritime operators must focus on implementing a robust safety management system, incorporating lessons learned from past incidents. The following measures are recommended:
(a) PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) Compliance:
Consistent use of appropriate gloves, protective boots, and other safety gear is vital in
minimising injury risks. Ensure regular training on PPE usage and maintenance to
maximise effectiveness.
(b) Enhanced Workplace Ergonomics:
Perform thorough ergonomic assessments of workspaces and provide training for staff
on proper lifting techniques and safe manual handling practices. Reducing strain on the
body, especially the hands, back, and legs, can significantly prevent injury.
(c) Emergency Preparedness and Reporting:
It is essential to establish clear protocols for injury reporting and response. Regular
emergency drills should be conducted to ensure prompt and effective action in the event
of an injury, minimizing the potential for severe outcomes.
By addressing these key areas, it is hoped that the maritime community would substantially reduce the frequency of injuries, creating a safer working environment for all personnel on board.
