The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) marked the christening of Terra Clove at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in Ulsan, South Korea. The 93,000-cubic-metre Very Large Ammonia Carrier (VLAC) is EPS’ first ammonia dual-fuelled vessel and the first ammonia dual-fuelled commercial newbuild vessel to be registered under the Singapore Registry of Ships (SRS). It is equipped with Everllence’s first commercial ammonia dual-fuelled two-stroke marine engine, which successfully completed factory acceptance testing in April 2026.

2.             The vessel is the result of a collaboration initiated in June 2022 by MPA, EPS, HHI, and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) to develop an ammonia dual-fuelled gas carrier under the Singapore flag. Terra Clove is the first of two such vessels being built by HHI for EPS, both of which will be registered under the Singapore flag.

3.             Designed to transport ammonia as cargo and use it as propulsion fuel, Terra Clove incorporates specialised ammonia fuel handling, containment, and safety systems. The vessel is expected to be delivered in November 2026, following its upcoming sea trials.

4.             As Singapore’s flag administration, MPA has worked closely with EPS, HHI, ABS, and other industry partners on the vessel’s technical and regulatory compliance. This included reviewing the vessel’s design against relevant International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidelines, participating in hazard identification and operability studies, and providing regulatory guidance on ammonia detection, fuel system safety, and emissions management. MPA also shared its experience from earlier ammonia trials to support the development of onboard safety procedures and crew preparedness.

5.             Mr Ang Wee Keong, Chief Executive of MPA, said, “Developing new technologies often comes with some uncertainties. Terra Clove shows that by bringing together expertise from across the maritime value chain, we can help address these uncertainties and investment risks, and give partners the confidence to move forward together. We hope the successful development of this vessel will give the wider industry greater confidence in ammonia as a marine fuel.”

6.             Mr Cyril Ducau, Chief Executive Officer of EPS, said, “The naming of Terra Clove marks an important milestone towards making ammonia a viable marine fuel. Beyond developing the technology, our priority is ensuring its safe and practical operation. With MPA’s regulatory guidance and the support of HHI, ABS, Everllence, and our other partners, we are building the expertise and capabilities needed to advance the safe adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel.”
