Exciting public outreach activities during Singapore Maritime Week 2014

The 9th Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) will take place from 6 to 11 April 2014. The SMW is the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore's (MPA) annual flagship event that gathers the local and international maritime community in Singapore for a week of conferences, exhibitions and networking events.

Mr Andrew Tan, Chief Executive, MPA, said, "SMW 2014 will once again receive strong support from both the local and international maritime community. Apart from engaging industry partners, SMW is also an important week for MPA to reach out to Singaporeans and to showcase our vibrant maritime industry. Apart from being an important sector contributing about seven per cent of Singapore's GDP and hiring more than 170,000 people, Maritime Singapore plays an important role in our daily lives by bringing us shipments of our daily necessities on time. We hope Singaporeans can learn more about Maritime Singapore and its career opportunities through the various SMW public outreach platforms."

Mr Lucien Wong, MPA's Chairman announced some of these outreach activities during MPA's Lunar New Year Media Appreciation Lunch this afternoon. The lunch was attended by 80 guests including the media and shipping associations.

SMW Exhibition

For those who are interested in Maritime Singapore or want to learn more about the maritime industry, the SMW exhibition will take place from Monday, 31 March to Sunday, 6 April at VivoCity. Two satellite exhibitions will take place at Jurong Point and Parkway Parade shopping malls simultaneously. The exhibitions take on an educational theme, displaying interesting ship models and interactive exhibits that will offer a glimpse into Maritime Singapore and its careers. Admission to the SMW Exhibitions is free.

Amazing Maritime Hunt
The Amazing Maritime Hunt (AMH) that will take place on Sunday, 6 April, tests participants' maritime knowledge and skills in fun and challenging activities that everyone can enjoy, including a location hunt for places associated with Singapore's rich maritime heritage. Teams are required to strategise their travelling routes and compete in various physical and mental challenges in order to rack up as many points as possible. The AMH is a half-day outdoor event open to members of the general public, of all ages. There are goodie bags to be given away and attractive cash prizes to be won. Members of the public can visit www.amazingmaritimehunt.com.sg to sign up for this event.

SMW 2014 Photography Competition
In celebration of all things maritime, the SMW photography competition invites enthusiasts to capture the diverse scenes of Maritime Singapore through their lenses. Shortlisted photographs will be exhibited at the SMW exhibition. MPA, the Association of Singapore Marine Industries, the Singapore Maritime Foundation, and the Singapore Shipping Association is co-organising the competition with the Photographic Society of Singapore.

Maritime Learning Journey (MLJ)

The MLJ allows participants to catch a rare glimpse of the maritime operations carried out in the Port of Singapore and gain a firsthand experience of Singapore's dynamic maritime industry and its career opportunities. During the week of SMW, 400 students will get a chance to go out to sea, visit the lighthouse, and tour Singapore's port terminals and the Singapore Maritime Gallery.

Maritime Corner

On Friday, 11 April, MPA will wrap up SMW 2014 by unveiling its first-ever outdoor exhibit in Singapore to tell the story of Maritime Singapore. More details will be available at a later date.

About Singapore Maritime Week (6 - 11 April 2014)
Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) is the leading maritime event in Singapore. Driven by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), SMW gathers the international maritime community in Singapore for a week of conferences, dialogues, exhibitions and social events in celebration of all things maritime. The range of activities and events organised by MPA, the industry, and research and educational institutions, as well as the cosmopolitan profile of participants, reflect the vibrancy and diversity of Singapore as a major international maritime centre.

SMW has grown in significance since the inaugural event in 2006, and is attracting more participants and event organisers from around the world. Participants can experience something new every year, as activities are added to the line-up, and as eminent speakers share their insights and participate in dialogues on topical maritime issues. This dynamism and the good range of issues discussed during SMW are major draws for maritime decision-makers, as are the many business networking platforms. This is why Singapore Maritime Week is all about PEOPLE, IDEAS and OPPORTUNITIES for the maritime community.
