Hijack of Singapore-registered Vessel "Safmarine Kuramo" Off Nigerian Coast

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) received a report at approximately 2006 hrs (Singapore time) on 05 February 2016 that a Singapore-registered container vessel, SAFMARINE KURAMO (24488 GT), was hijacked off the Nigerian Coast.

At that time of the incident, the vessel was proceeding from Pointe Noire, Congo to Port Onne, Nigeria. There are 25 crew, comprising nationals from the Philippines, South Africa, India, United Kingdom, and Thailand. There were no Singaporeans on board the vessel. At 0120 hrs (Singapore time), it was reported that the Nigerian authorities have secured the release of all the crew and the vessel. All crew members are reported to be safe.

The SAFMARINE KURAMO is managed by Maersk Line A/S. As Flag State, MPA worked with the company on the safety of the crew and vessel.
