Oil Tanker Runs Aground Off Batu Berhanti Beacon (8th Update)

07 October 2000

As of 0700hrs, reports from the recce conducted by the MPA patrol vessels revealed that small broken patches of treated oil were sighted in the Western Anchorage and West Keppel Fairway, as well as in the Singapore Strait south of the Eastern Anchorage. A total of 42 anti-pollution craft have been deployed to clean up the oil in these areas.

A helicopter took off at 0750hrs today for an air recce.

Another oil boom has been deployed off East Coast Park to deflect any oil that may drift there.

The cleaning of the affected beaches including Sentosa, St John's Island and Sisters' Island will continue today. No new areas have been affected on these islands.

The ship-to-ship transfer of the remaining oil on the Natuna Sea continues. The oil booms remain around the vessel to contain any fresh leaks from the damaged tanks. Any fresh oil leaks within the boom will be treated with dispersants immediately. 6 anti-pollution craft are also on standby in the vicinity of the vessel to monitor and clean up any oil spill sighted.

The MPA's Emergency Operations Centre and seven patrol vessels will continue to monitor the port waters and co-ordinate the clean-up operations around the clock.

End of Release.
