Singapore Maritime Week 2013 - People, Ideas, Opportunities
Celebrating a vibrant Maritime Singapore

Singapore will celebrate all things maritime and play host to the international maritime community next week, from 7 to 12 April. Organised by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2013 will gather the international maritime community in Singapore for a week of conferences, dialogues, exhibitions and social events.

SMW 2013 will be officially launched by Mrs Josephine Teo, Minister of State for Finance and Transport, on Sunday, 7 April at Plaza Singapura.
Mr Lam Yi Young, Chief Executive, MPA said, "The Singapore Maritime Week is now into its eighth year and has grown to become a major international maritime event that brings together the international maritime community to network, exchange ideas and explore opportunities."

Celebrating maritime outreach

SMW 2013 kicks off with several programmes aimed at capturing the imagination and interest of the general public. An SMW t-shirt design competition was held from February to mid March, where participants were encouraged to get creative and come up with t-shirt designs based on their impressions of Maritime Singapore. The competition attracted more than 700 entries from both members of the public and students from LASALLE College of the Arts.

For those who are interested in Maritime Singapore or want to learn more about the maritime industry, the SMW exhibition, themed "An Insight into Maritime Singapore" will take place from 1 to 7 April at Plaza Singapura, with two satellite exhibitions taking place at VivoCity and nex shopping malls at the same time. The public will get an inside look into Maritime Singapore through cross-sections, blueprints and interactive exhibits.

Another public outreach activity is the Amazing Maritime Adventure, which will feature a unique series of games and quizzes centred on maritime themes. Taking place on Sunday, 7 April, the event has attracted over 1,000 participants from both the public and the local maritime community.

From 8 to 12 April, over 400 participants will go out to sea, visit Raffles Lighthouse, local shipyards, and the newly opened Singapore Maritime Gallery during the Maritime Learning Journeys to gain firsthand experience of Singapore's dynamic maritime industry.

Celebrating maritime ideas

SMW 2013 will feature a range of conferences and seminars that allow the maritime community to come together to share and discuss a wide range of maritime ideas.

The Singapore Maritime Lecture remains a key highlight of SMW. Mr James Hughes-Hallett, Chairman, John Swire & Sons Limited will deliver the 7th Singapore Maritime Lecture on 10 April at Shangri-la Hotel. He will be sharing his maritime insights with more than 200 high-profile guests during the lecture and dialogue session.

This year, the Sea Asia Exhibition and Conference will bring together over 14,000 participants, including CEOs, decision-makers and maritime professionals from diverse sectors of the global shipping industry, over its three-day event showcasing maritime products and services. The conference will engage industry leaders in thought-provoking discussions on current issues facing the industry.

Taking place on 11 April, the biennial Singapore International Maritime Awards (IMA), a gala dinner and awards ceremony, will honour individuals and companies for their outstanding contributions to Maritime Singapore. The much anticipated results of the US$1 million Next Generation Container Port Challenge, launched at SMW 2012, will also be announced at this event.

The International Chemical and Oil Pollution Conference and Exhibition (ICOPCE) 2013 is Asia's only international event on risk mitigation for oil and chemical logistics. This event provides a platform to reinforce industry initiatives, and allow participants to learn from peers on best practices around the globe.

The ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre (ISC), together with BIMCO, INTERTANKO and the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), will jointly organise the ReCAAP ISC Piracy and Sea Robbery Conference 2013 on 9 April. The conference will feature an update on the piracy and sea robbery situation in Asia, international efforts and initiatives in combating piracy and a panel discussion on anti-piracy measures, lessons learned and challenges encountered.

The Maritime Law Association of Singapore (MLAS) will be organising the 5th Asian Maritime Law Conference in conjunction with SMW. The Conference, organised in collaboration with the Transport Law Commission of the International Association of Young Lawyers, is themed "The Future of Shipping".

Celebrating maritime opportunities

SMW 2013 has also lined-up various social and networking events to provide opportunities for industry players to exchange ideas and forge partnerships and collaborations.

This year's social and networking opportunities include the Sea Asia's Speakers' Dinner, Singapore Association of Ship Suppliers 33rd Anniversary Dinner, the Sailors' Society drinks reception, the ICOPCE Speakers' Dinner and the Singapore International Maritime Awards Dinner.

About Singapore Maritime Week (7 - 12 April 2013)
Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) is the leading maritime event in Singapore. Driven by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), SMW gathers the international maritime community in Singapore for a week of conferences, dialogues, exhibitions and social events in celebration of all things maritime. The range of activities and events organised by MPA, the industry, and research and educational institutions, as well as the cosmopolitan profile of participants, reflect the vibrancy and diversity of Singapore as a major international maritime centre.

SMW has grown in size and significance since the inaugural event in 2006, and is attracting more participants and event organisers from around the world. Participants can experience something new every year, as activities are added to the line-up, and as eminent speakers share their insights and participate in dialogues on topical maritime issues. This dynamism and the good range of issues discussed during SMW are major draws for maritime decision-makers, as are the many business networking platforms. This is why Singapore Maritime Week is all about PEOPLE, IDEAS and OPPORTUNITIES for the maritime community.
